Too Many Ships?

Next week we’ll be finishing the “spaceship race” sessions of our Classic Traveller game.

I’m looking forward to the session. I postponed it from last Tuesday. I was just way too worn out to run a somewhat complicated session. Dealing with four ships all racing and shooting at each other (simulated damage) while running two PCs back on-planet involved in antics in a casino – it is a lot to keep track of and I just didn’t have it in me. This coming week I will do what I must to conserve my energy that day, and I’ll take some allergy meds.

On thing I have learned from this adventure already is this: fights with more than two ships involved, but only one of the ships is run by the PCs, are not that fun for me as the Ref. Keeping track of the other ships is a pain, and it does somewhat take the attention away from the PCs more than I want. It’s important, I think, to have spaceship stuff in an SF game, but it is a roleplaying game and I want to keep the focus on what the PCs are up to, rather than worrying about ships. Ship vs Ship is fun, especially using Cepheus Engine “Crew Actions” and rules. Ship vs 4 Other Ships is kind of a grind.

I think the rest of the race will be fun. But I don’t think I’ll do another multi-ship thing for a while.
